What are the best 1970's Darkstars out there that are still downloadable? I never met a Darkstar I did'nt like!
Also wonder why most 80's & 90's GD Aud sources sound so-so.
I figured they had the mic's and taping dialed in better, example: 8/6/71 sounds better then most 80's and later shows

08-06-1971 is the very rare exception. the dat auds from the late 80s 90s are still the best sounding audience sources

Right, I just don't understand why 8/6/71 sounds so incredibly good for an amateur audience recording? The sound is so clear and powerful - I've not heard any other audience recording sound nearly as good.

8/6/71 was the classic example of a taper being in THE perfect spot in THE perfect room on the night where the band had THE perfect sound dialed in. The show was taped by Rob Bertrando; I don't remember what his setup was but you're right, it was primitive by today's standards (and even by those of the 80s and 90s). Also, if you listen to that tape the audience makes most of its noise between songs. There's not a whole lot of chatter during the songs or big roars going up every time Garcia opens his mouth. I know I'm not alone in considering 8/6/71 the best audience tape ever made bar none.

The DS>Attics>DS>Sugar Mags>DS can't be beat, in fact, the entire electric set smokes.

TO EARL:::

The reason for the 80,90 Aud tapes being so so, is that in late 79,Healy was getting feed up w/ tapers knocking stuff into him.He banned Front of board taping entirely after late 79.The "tapers section"is right behind the board and is actually not a great place to record.
Hope that helps

as time went on the venue sizes increased and the ability to get good sound to start with diminished.
